What is a Bento Cock?

The classical Second Life Skeleton - before 2015

In Second Life, the Avatar is a skeleton with a mesh around. When an animator creates an animation, they actually animate the Skeleton.

Until 2015, the Second Life Avatar was extremely simple and limited, with just a small set of bones for the upper body, the arms and the legs:

You will also often read the term "Rig" instead of "Skeleton". Rig and Skeleton are synonyms. Also, you will see some items qualified as "rigged mesh". A rigged mesh is a mesh object that is attached to the skeleton, which means that this object can be animated.

Classic Cocks

Before 2015, all the cocks were "static". Indeed, due to the lack of bones in the skeleton, it was not possible to attach a cock to some bones. So in that time, the cocks were just "static" meshes. Here, the term "static" doesn't mean that the cock could not be adjusted or moved at all. It simply means that these cocks could not be animated. These cocks had to use some scripts to change their rotation and dimensions. Not only this was pretty complex to build, but the result was very limited in terms of possibilities.

In spite of these limitations, some very good cocks were built, like for example the whole range of Aeros Cocks. In the Aeros brand, only the Apollo Cock is actually a bento cock: all other Aeros cocks are static meshes (they are still amazing, no doubt about this!)

The BENTO skeleton

In 2015, Linden Lab enhanced the skeleton by adding a big number of bones. This enhancement is known as "Project BENTO". So the SL avatar now has bones in the fingers and in the face. They also added many bones for non-humanoid avatars: Wings, Back Legs (aka "Hind bones"), and Tail so an avatar can be an animal, a fury, a dragon or whatever you want:

A BENTO Cock?

As you can see in the picture above, Linden Lab has added some bones for wings, tail and back legs, but nothing for genitals. Fortunately, we can easily reuse some of the bones for another use. If you are building a Cock for human avatars, you can take the bones of the tail, or the bone of the back legs, since those are not used by a human avatar, and you can make your cock with these bones.

That said, each builder will choose different bones. In the case of the Good Moaning Live Cock, i've decided to use the Hind bones (these are the "back legs" bones). But other bento cocks, like for example the Aeros Apollo, or The Physics Cock, use some other bones. There is no "perfect" solution and each builder takes their decision depending on what they want to do exactly. The result of this is that there is no inter-compatibility between all the existing bento cocks. An animation made for the Aeros Apollo might not work for the Live Cock, an animation made for the Live Cock might not work for the Physics Cock, etc...

The skeleton of the Live Cock: these bones are actually the "hind bones" (ie: the back legs bones) that we have moved in front of the body in order to fit a cock.

Compatibility between the different brands of cocks?

In very simple terms, there are two kinds of sex animations in Second life:

For example, take the Cataclysmic Bed. In this bed is a category "Live Cock". The animations of this category are of the second kind described above: they animate your body AND your cock. This requires that you use the Live Cock: nothing will happen if you use another brand of cock. Now, if you go into another category of the bed, for example the "Boy on top" category: this category contains animations of the first kind, this means that they animate your body but not your cock. Your cock will still be automatically adjusted because i have integrated some plugins for Aeros, the P and the Live Cock. This will auto-adjust the angle of your cock, without actually animating it.

In addition to all this, let me go a bit further in some details: in my furniture, i have actually split my animations into some sub-animations: one for the body, and another one for the cock. The scripts check what the male user is actually wearing. If you are wearing the Live Cock and play an animation of the "Live Cock" category, then this will animate your cock. But if you are not wearing the Live Cock, it will not play the cock animation. This way: Good Moaning furniture will NOT break other cocks.

This incompatibility between cock brands means that most furniture with cock animations will deform cocks they were not made for, but Good Moaning furniture has added safety features that prevent deforming of other brands' cocks by turning off cock animations if the user is not wearing a Good Moaning cock.
